An eerily frightening concept makes for a compelling read in Marci Giebels’ sci-fi thriller where talent can be bought and sold as a commodity. The combination of a unique premise and an eclectic set of characters brought together by the nefarious Davis Agency, which acts as a broker for inborn gifts, kept me interested from start to finish.

The back-and-forth narration that focuses on four sets of characters, with a gradual interweaving of their lives, creates suspense and intrigue, making the reader wonder how they all connect as danger pursues them. A young musician, a dead artist’s grandson, a young woman with an immeasurable IQ, and a former football star fall victim to the greed of an organization that acts as God, taking and giving talent for cash.

Vivid descriptions and non-stop action, with scenes alternating from one set of characters to another, along with Geibels’ smooth writing style, keep the pages turning to a shocking conclusion. Full of tense moments, shocking twists, and explosive scenes, What Money Can’t Buy will leave you questioning whether having talent, natural or purchased, is worth it.

Different from other psychological thrillers I’ve read, What Money Can’t Buy poses the question: What if this were truly possible? A scary thought. A great read. Highly recommended.
